Song Ha Nguyen
"Life is too short, and DNA is too long" by the Jurassic Park's author - Michael Crichton is my favorite quote. I love DNA. Did you know the telomere (non-coding DNA sequence) is hypothesized to be our molecular aging clock? Diet, sleep, and lifestyle can influence our telomere's length thus cells life span. As a picky eater, cool biological evidence really scares me (in a good way) into eating healthy, sleeping well, and grinding hours of badminton, my other biggest passion. Extracting the practicality of such beautiful molecules of life into BIOMOD's projects would also truly "lengthen" my telomere.

Joseph Deng
Hi I'm Joseph, I'm way cooler than Juju and I'm also in my third year in Computer Science and Physics 🤓! I don't know too much about biology stuff so I'm just here to work on the website, outside of biomod and school I also like rock climbing, running, guitar, clairo, and matcha!!!

Hear Some of Our Stories

Karina Akhmedova
Former Captain
I became a part of UBC BIOMOD in the beginning of my second year in Biomedical Engineering. I was a member for three years! Originally, I joined as a part of wetlab subteam: worked on protocol development and performed some experimental work. Later, I was promoted to a wetlab subteam lead, and then a co-captain along with Paniz. UBC BIOMOD was a great place to grow as a leader, an engineer, and a person. My time with the team allowed me to gain technical knowledge in various fields and directly apply them on a problem. A highlight memory of mine is us going to a 2023 competition in Tokyo, we were so happy and so nervous at the same time. I had to present computational results back then and it was my first time ever presenting work internationally. BIOMOD is about people, it's a place to learn and solve together.

Miguel Tsai
Former Captain
Miguel was in UBC BIOMOD for 5 years, starting from his 1st year. When he joined, he was a part of many subteams: wetlab, website, Cadnano(now computational and modeling). He became a wetlab lead and eventually one of the co-captains. He was an essential member of the many projects and subteams he was on. He jokingly says all the time that he ate, slept and dreamed of UBC BIOMOD. He learned so much from his time at UBC BIOMOD and made so many good friends. He was mentored by many people at UBC BIOMOD and hopes he did the same for all the members during his time. He thinks the best part of UBC BIOMOD is learning from each other and facing all these challenges together.
