MEET THE TEAM

The Captains

IMMANUEL ABDI

WETLAB TEAM LEAD

Former blind muscle-flexing enthusiast has updated to version 12.0: he can finally see, folks. He is indeed a feast to the auditorial senses with his unbearingly loud typing during meetings and a lovely “yee” to conclude his sentences. He has toned down since last year but let’s blame that on the weather.

MELANIE LAW

WETLAB TEAM LEAD

Three+ years of Biomod has trained Melanie to become their fearless and charismatic leader. She brings her team together through jokes that are so bad they become good and anecdotal stories from her life that her team has had to repeatedly listen to. From CadNano Design Master to Website Wizard, you better watch out!

STEPHANIE NGUYEN

VIDEO TEAM LEAD

Functions as the powerhouse of the video/website team by converting her boredom to the blender files, divi pages, character designs. A now struggling meme queen because of obvious viral reasons *cough* (jk please don’t think I have Covid). Is part-time bunny, full-time Stephie.

RETURNING MEMBERS

CHARLIE SUSHAMS

CaDNAno DESIGN TEAM LEAD

As a Kinesiology student, Charlie used to wonder whether his inability to fold a paper crane would negatively impact his ability to contribute to a DNA Origami project. These days, he still has no idea whether it’s right over left or left over right, but he does know that in order to remain sane, you should save your structure files at least every 10.5 seconds.

DAVID MACKAY

EDITING TEAM LEAD

His creative process: first an idea, then revision, fine-tuning, but suddenly denial with a rush of panic followed by many nachos. Reset, new idea! Revision, frustration, denial, more nachos. Repeat. Eventually revert back to original idea, then excitement, and finally presentation, but soon followed by… nachos.

EASHAN HALBE

WEBSITE TEAM LEAD

An individual capable of tremendous hurry as desired, Eashan is an avid proponent of finishing work before it grows to become a nuisance. He appreciates (script)writing, drafting protocol, and lab work and is always up for a spot of badminton. He is currently in his 3rd year of Biology.

FUMI INABA

CaDNAno DESIGN TEAM LEAD

Honestly a huge mess. If someone could help him sleep less and be more productive regularly he’d appreciate it a lot. 🙂 He gets shy in social settings and thrives if you leave him in his natural state, a NEET.

RAJESHWAR LALLY

VIDEO TEAM LEAD

Rajeshwar is a third year microbiology student. Watch him go skrrrrrrt on his motorcycle

ETHAN RAJKUMAR

WEBSITE TEAM LEAD

Ethan spends his time just sleeping, contemplating what a guy in Chemistry like him is doing in a team with competent and intelligent science and engineering students or staying up till 4 am working on stuff he was supposed to do hours ago.  Ethan’s lifeforce is caffeine, some say he becomes a monster without it.

AMY KANG

This is Amy (the human not the cat). Her superpowers include eating an entire bag of ghost pepper chips without flinching and functioning on 4 hours of sleep. The latter superpower is also coincidentally how she survived 4 years of university. She is currently in 4th year Pharmacology hoping to attend law school upon graduation.

MAPLE LEI

Remember Maple? Often referred to as mapo tofu? Well she’s back and better than ever for her second year on the biomod team as the new, improved and deep fried agedashi tofu. Her added ability: potato starch crust; gives her the power to complete tasks with efficiency and precision, helping drive the team towards success!

KAREN LI

Karen is a pharmacy student with the sleep schedule of an owl. Willing to draw things if you bribe her with food.

RYAN YEUNG

You thought this would be Ryan’s BIO, but it was me, DIO. Cringy memes aside, Ryan is a biomedical engineering student who is helping the BIOMOD team through research, lab work and website design.

NATHAN LOUIE

Nathan is a 3rd year student in microbiology and immunology. Aside from spending his time completing lab work for BIOMOD, he also enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and cycling.

JASKIRAT MALHI

As a survivor of third year Microbiology and Immunology, I now enjoy my summer with my one true love…soccer..I mean BIOMOD. I am also currently on my co-op work term so I am happy to talk about my experience thus far.

CINDY LAM

Amid the pandemic, Cindy has been doing a lot of self-discovery and found that she’s a workaholic with anti-social tendencies. This creates a strong mixture of random bursts of funny and sometimes downright weird statements. Cindy has been avoiding a lot of responsibility but does do some behind the scene work.

JUSTIN CHHUOR

Back for round two of BIOMOD. His commitment and his drive are still highly dependent on the food offered at meetings, which are unfortunately online now. Luckily, he has been able to source his own snacks.

NATALIA GOSNELL

Natalia is a third year Biomedical Engineering student who loves working in the lab and on the video animation team. However, most of the time you can probably find her at the top of a mountain either with climbing gear in hand or skis on her feet, but either way huge smiles and bad jokes are always in tow.

NEW ADDITIONS TO THE TEAM

RACHAEL NICHOLAS

Rachael is a second year chemical and biological engineering student. She is passionate about biotechnology, and spends most of her time in BIOMOD desperately trying to keep up with the science students. You can usually find her in boxing classes taking out her frustrations about physics, or playing her clarinet.

PARVIN MALHI

Parvin is a second microbiology and immunology student. She enjoys doing lab work and website design. However, Parvin’s most notable accomplishment is mastering the talent of staring at her computer screen for hours on end. When she is not trapped amongst the four walls of her room, she enjoys volunteering, hiking and playing soccer.

PARSA MOHEBAN

Parsa is a second year Biomedical Engineering student planning on specializing in biomechanical engineering, though he likes cells and stuff too. When back on campus, you can find him sprinting across Main Mall in a lab coat while an arduino hangs out of his bag. Talk to him about anything but his degree.

ARLENE MIRZOKHIDOVA

Arlene is a third-year student in Biochemistry and Forensic sciences program. She likes to bike, hike and watch Netflix.

YAO ZHANG

Yao is a fifth year Chemistry student. He enjoys nanomedicine research.

JENNY ZHANG

Jenny is a second year microbiology and immunology student and this is her first year in Biomod. She’s always down for anything, except for country music and cilantro.

MIGUEL ROBERTO TSAI

Miguel is a first year student who plans to major in biochem or biotech. He is a first time BIOMODer and is really enjoying his time being confused. Even though most of the time he has no idea what he is doing, he is always trying his best. He will talk about anything Nintendo or Switch related.

KSHEMAKA GUNAWARDENA

Kshemaka is a living, breathing human being. Apart from being a second year microbiology and immunology student, he also enjoys eating ramen. As if these statements weren’t already shocking enough, he sometimes drinks water too. As does any human, he strives to keep moving forward in life and will never stop running after that which he cannot yet see.

VITTORIA BAHT

Vittoria is a second year Biochemistry student. She is excited to go back to school in person but not to have to commute to unrecorded 8am lectures for the entire year. She enjoys eating watermelon, spending time outdoors skiing, hiking, and playing soccer on the beach.

CALLY YEUNG

Cally is a first year student and enjoys being part of BIOMOD, even though she doesn’t know what’s going on half the time. She helps the team with video production.

JOHNNY CAI

Johnny is a second year Biomedical Engineering student. He loves martial arts, badminton, video games and sometimes, even studying. He is very serious and not a joker at all.

EVA SU

Eva is a second year bio student! This is her first year in Biomod and she’s excited to explore the field of research with the team! She loves coffee, the colour blue, and going on adventures <3

KAREN HWANG

Karen is a third-year Cellular Bioengineering student. She loves turtles and would like to learn how to scuba dive to explore their natural habitat. Aside from doing research and designing graphics for the BIOMOD project website, she enjoys playing badminton and learning Japanese.

MARK WANG

Mark is a second year Microbiology and Immunology student and this is his first year on the BIOMOD team. He spends a lot of his time napping and writing out schedules that he will not follow. He is also very cool and loves asian food.
